Air Training Corps: >Rank Structure

Rank Structure
There are five ranks of cadet; Cadet, Corporal, Sergeant, Flight Sergeant and Cadet Warrant Officer. All cadet ranks are classified as NCO ranks; you do not salute an NCO rank. As an unpromoted cadet, you do not wear a rank slide, ranks from Corporal through to Cadet Warrant Officer (the four remaining ranks), are outlined below: -
All cadet ranks are classified as being NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer). The first progression from a cadet will be that to Corporal, this being a junior NCO rank. Corporals are responsible for the discipline of cadets and will give orders to accomplish tasks and duties ordered by senior ranks. Promotion to the rank of Corporal will usually take between 2 and 3 years. Usually the cadet will possess Leading classification and will have shown maturity and leadership skills. Appointment to the post is at the discretion and judgment of the Squadron's Commanding Officer. You may also attend a JNCO (Junior NCO) training course, usually held at Squadron level.
After a year and if in the eyes of your Squadron Commander you have demonstrated the abilities of a Corporal, you may be eligible to become a senior NCO - a Sergeant. Again the selection procedure will apply. You should be at least a Senior classification cadet. As a SNCO you will be expected to conduct more duties and undertake more responsibility than that of a Corporal. You should also attend a senior NCO's course.
Promotion to Flight Sergeant is made when you have demonstrated the abilities and attributes over and above that of a Sergeant. As the name implies, being a Flight Sergeant, you will be expected to control a flight of cadets. You will also attend a SNCO (Senior NCO) training course at your Squadron.
CWO is the highest rank a cadet can achieve. This appointment is usually made after an interview at Wing HQ by Wing Staff. You must be 18 years or over for promotion to CWO and you will usually be a Staff Cadet.
