Modelling

Hello and welcome to the Modelling section of the 90 (Speke) Squadron website.

The basic idea of this page is to give an overview of what the hobby in general, entails and to show some of the excellent, competition winning models that the Squadron team has constructed over the years.

Firstly, the big question, what is Modelling?

educational. It helps develop latent skills that we all possess to one degree or another. Chief among those is patience. Everyone can take a model kit and ‘throw it’ together in a day! That is not the object of the exercise.

To quote another excellent modeller, “the idea is to construct a three dimensional photograph or snapshot of the subject at a specific moment in time”.

This is where the ‘art’ or skill of the modeller comes into play. To make a true scale representation of an aircraft, ship, automobile or whatever, takes time and patience.

Along the way you will learn, how to use the various tools correctly. Safe handling of solvents (glue), knives, paints and a multitude of other items as well. You will also learn how to use a paintbrush or airbrush, how to apply the various decals (transfers) onto the model. How to handle a completed model without causing damage. Damaging a completed model that someone has taken time to produce, often over several weeks, is not only distressing for the builder, but is one quick way to lose friends!
A lot of time (not too mention money) is often invested in these models and the builder can be justifiably proud of there achievement.

So, if you fancy getting to grips with one, then come along to one of our modelling sessions, get to know the team and have a go. We encourage new faces in the team and all are welcome.
